Parts of a Simple Microscope - Labeled (with diagrams)

A simple microscope is a very first type of microscope ever created. It consists of simple parts and performs simple functions. Although there are now many advanced microscope types, some applications may still demand the use of a simple microscope.

In this article, we are going to discuss the parts and functions of a simple microscope.

The mechanical parts of the microscope are meant to support the other parts. They are labeled mechanical because they help in the adjustment of other parts for accurate magnification of the object being studied. The following are what consist of the mechanical parts:

Metal stand

The metal stand of a simple microscope has two primary components – base plate and vertical rod. The metal stand supports the entire parts of the microscope. It also provides stability to other parts.

Stage

It is a plate made of metal and rectangular in shape. It has a hole in the center which allows the light from the below to pass through. The function of the stage is to hold the slide containing the specimen being studies.

Slanting wings

Although not usually found in all simple microscopes, some have a pair of slanting wings projecting from both sides of the stage. The function of the slanting wings is to support the hand when examining the subject. (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5)

The optical parts of a simple microscope are centered on the specimen – lighting, and magnification. They are as follows:

Mirror

You can distinguish a simple microscope from other microscopes because of its mirror. It has a plano-convex mirror that focuses the surrounding light on the subject being studied.

Lens

It is a biconvex lens found above the stage. The purpose of the lens is to magnify the size of the subject being examined. The image of the object being studied can be enlarged through the lens enabling the examiner to thoroughly check the object. (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10)

A simple microscope today looks totally different than what it is before. Although many industries use compound microscopes, there are still organizations that prefer to use a simple microscope because of the simplicity of use. Today, a simple microscope can be found useful in studying the particles of soil, check for the existence of different types of skin diseases, check for a sample algae and fungi, and in the jewelry business, specifically, checking the fine parts of jewelry.
